Teroforma

A few weeks ago Shapeways challenged  the internet world to show them what Apple’s “Siri” looks like. The best visualization of the program would be printed in 3D. Shapeways recieved  hundreds of entries in the form of sketches, 3D models, animated gifs and illustrations. The entries were inspired by everything form Siri’s robotic tendencies to her subtle feminine allure. The above pictured entry from SaGa Design was the winner and has been realized in 3D. Very cool.

I used to really dislike yellow as a color, but lately I’ve been loving it. This room in particular with its warm wood table and shiny gold pendant lamps, the bright sunshiny hue of the chairs really are a nice touch. Whether yellow has always been your thing or if you are a new fan of the color like me you can try you hand at this, bright happy room. These retro diner chairs are available in almost very color of the rainbow (just in case you aren’t feeling the yellow), and these Tom Dixon polished brass pendant lights will look great in contrast with a slightly worn vintage table. Try some of our Artist’s Canvas Collection, the color palette play nicely with the yellow and browns of this room. To add a bit of detail, Design within reach sells miniature versions of all sorts of famous furniture, I love how this room features the mini Thonet Chair No. 14 on the mantle.

We’re going on  a road trip!

Ok, not really, we aren’t driving, so it’s not a road trip. But, we are flying out to Chicago today! We will all be attending the International Home and Housewares Show which runs form March 10th to 13th.  We’ve spent the past 2 weeks designing our booth and getting our products ready to present and we are really excited to get everything set up. Our booth number s 4269 just in case you feel like stopping in for a visit!

We’ll be doing our best to keep our blog and twitter up to date with photos of our trip, so check back later for some cool Chicago photos!

Dark walls can be really difficult to pull off, they tend to make a room seem small and well, dark. Miles Redd, however, does an excellent job of making these glossy navy walls look awesome. If you’re looking to paint a room a dark color try going for a slightly nautical feel with a porthole mirror, like this one from Skipjack’s Nautical Living. Also try using big funky textures like this fabric from Kravet, and pop color accents like this sweet chartreuse lamp. Place some of our Ekke Stacking Soapstone Votives around the room to set the mood.

This massive work of art was trampled into the snow of Colorado’s Rabbit Ears Pass by artist Sonia Hinrichsen and 5 snow shoe wearing volunteers. The pattern and the texture created by the foot prints makes a mesmerizing drawing, I honestly thought the trailing paths were a close up of stitching on fabric at first glance. Check out the link below for an aerial video of the “drawing” process.

I’ve been taking a class at the School of Visual Arts for the past few weeks, last Tuesday in class we watched this video. It is absolutely amazing, I’ve never seen anything like it. Blu Domenico, know simply as Blu, is a Buenos Aires based artist who creates complex stop motion animations in a very large scale.  He uses the sides of buildings and empty parking lots all across the globe to plot out his stories in paint. Though he doesn’t limit himself to flat paint, he frequently used common objects to transition from flat surfaces into the 3D realm. I love how the painted aspects leave a sort of trail across the walls as the animation progresses, it’s a really cool effect.

The Green Lake in Austria is very aptly named, the bright emerald waters are stunningly vibrant. The surround park is beautiful as well, but the color of the lake isn’t the only reason this park is cool. Because it is nestled  at the foot of the snow-capped Hochschwab Moutains, in Tragoess, Styria, the lake waters rise dramatically during the spring and summer months when the snow melts. This submerges the park entirely. A visit to the park during the winter allows you to walk the park on foot, while a summer visit requires scuba gear to go exploring. Swimming through the park beneath the beautiful green water looks like a truly breath taking experience, I’d love to try it.

Knitting has never looked so good.

Britain-based textile designer Claire-Anne O’Brien was inspired by the many types of knit stitches to create these large scale knit stools. I think it’s really cool to see the normally tiny stitches blown up, they texture they create is really unique. Claire’s Knit Stools were exhibited at Designersblock in London during September 2011. See more of Claire’s Knitting here.
