Why Thea’s Smiling

December 07, 2007

Designer Thea Mehl is happy. Having just moved back home to Oslo, Norway from London, she will be able to continue those relationships most important to her. Thea finds inspiration in all kinds of relationships, maybe because of her strong family values or maybe because as a designer she’s conscious of an object’s place in the world.

Growing up in Larvik, Thea formed a strong bond with her grandfather as she watched him build model planes, trains, and kites in his loft studio. With an architect for a father and an interior designer for a mother, design clearly runs in her blood, but it’s her determination to make the everyday simple and enjoyable that provides her with the challenges that keep her work fresh and relevant.

You can see her love for laughter in her design work, where she adds cheeky details and uses brilliant colors. Have a look at the clever lens tumblers she designed for us to see her individual take on a classic form.

Linen Can Be An Emotional Thing

December 02, 2007

Linen loom

Growing up in a house in the south of Sweden where her mother spent her free time weaving linen on a hand loom, our linen designer (and co-founder), Anna, learned the value of the tiny details in life. Humming as she went, her mum would sometimes discover a minuscule flaw in her weave and, without hesitation, track back hours of work to correct the mistake.

Anna uses what her mother taught her to carefully select the linen for our company. With a vast amount of linen to choose from, it’s knowing the tiny details that keeps her eye needle sharp. When choosing linen, Anna starts with the quality that best shows the natural beauty and feel of the material, but also looks for that something extra:

“To me, linen is about much more than just quality and color, it’s an emotional thing. Christmas in my house was always filled with the little reminders of how much mum cared - at breakfast on Christmas morning, there were her hand-woven placemats; at dinner, there would be the runner that she had woven especially for that year. When you’re taught to care that much about the little things, it’s a great feeling to know that perhaps my choices for our linens may bring something special to somebody else.”

The result is a selection of high-quality, long fibre linens made to the exacting standards of the Masters of Linen guild. Linas Nordic, our linen partners in Lithuania, focus on quality as well as responsibility (they are accredited by human ecology watchdog OEKO-Tex as well as ISO) allowing you to combine simple, timeless designs with a range of colors to create your own, individual style in a conscientious way.
